Beyond The Reef by Scott Baker Sweeney

This is a cute story that can be read to children to teach them the importance of listening to their parents.  It can also be used to start a conversation with kids who have been adopted, as Roy the rowboat is.

The story line was cute and the illustrations kept my son entertained, so that in of itself is a plus in my book. It was also refreshing to read a children’s book that had a beginning, middle and end.  So many are written as blurbs and in jarring sentences that even my son finds them annoying.  But this book, is nothing like that.  Since it has a story line, you can stop and ask your child “What do you think is going to happen?” or “Do you think they are going to go beyond the reef?”  Interaction.  That’s what this book brings.

The only issue I had with it, is that one page is riddled with grammatical errors.  Quotes are placed in the incorrect spot and the word “waited” is used instead of “weighted”.

That set aside, the book contains everything little boys love.  The sense of danger, action, and redemption.  This book has been placed in our “nightly reading choices” corner.  And in this house that is odd occasion, as my son is a much harsher critic that I.
