You Morbid Westphal by Steven Rage

Posted on 05 February 2010 by the journalist

Storyline:

The story line is okay.  Deals with the twisted part of life.  It doesn’t really come by it in a new way, but for those that like dark fiction, this could be a good read.

Story Characters:

They seemed forced and at times contrived even for a dark fiction read.

Writing Style:

I didn’t like this writing style.  It wasn’t easy to read or follow along.  I realize what the author was trying to do, but feel a little more research needs to be done.  He should read more Little, Piccirilli and King in order to get the sentence structure correct for this subject matter.

Editing Style:

This killed me.  There were spelling errors all over the place which really took away from the reading experience.  That alone almost turned this into a DNF book.  Besides the spelling errors, sentences were cut in half and re-started on a new line.  This would make sense in the correct spots, but they were obvious errors in this case.

Overall Thoughts:

I wasn’t into this book at all.  Sadly not because of subject matter, but because of writing and editing style.  I suggest Stephen Rage research authors he admires to get a better understanding of flow in the dark fiction genre.

Product Description

WELCOME TO HARBORSIDE DISTRICT HOSPITAL… ..where three of a kind have come to live, work and kill. Born whole from the rectum of a dying patient, Morbid silently stalks the hospital’s hallways, heinously dispatching the most helpless of patients and in the most painfully repulsive of manners. In the meantime, in order to pay for his family and home that includes his ghost step-father Sammy and his pet aborted fetus Chip, Westphal has to ingest mounds of dangerous narcotics to get through his night shifts. Barely hanging on to his Care Tech gig by his fingernails, the last thing Westphal needs is to be accused of Morbid’s evil deeds. You, on the other hand, simply want to find some solace. Terminally ill from a virulent infection, and dependent on Life Support, all You beg for a peaceful and dignified demise. Shirk has other plans for You. The ancient drug-snuffling demon makes You relive all of your deadly and venial sins as he tortures You. Night after night. Until eternal Damnation begins for YOU MORBID WESTPHAL, yet again.
